This modern coastal home incorporates the airy views of the Sakonnet River into a bright, contemporary interior that utilizes natural materials throughout. A collaboration with rising architect Chris Cote, this Portsmouth home is the definition of a modern oasis. The renovation project was awarded a Silver Medal Design Award by Rhode Island Monthly.
There is something particularly special about working in coastal communities, as it allows us to naturally find inspiration in the world surrounding our clients’ homes.
When creating the interiors for our clients in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, we were thrilled to incorporate the airy views of the Sakonnet River into a bright, modern interior. We took our cues from nature to fit out the interior - and from emerging architect Chris Cote who had a strong vision when developing the architectural design for the house, employing progressive, natural materials inside and out.
Chris brought exciting architectural elements to the interior too, including a glass elevator shaft full of honesty with fully-exposed mechanical components. Instead of shying away from industrial elements like these, we embraced the challenge and paired modern with the warmth and texture synonymous with the coastline.
Perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of the project was our clients’ support of our collaboration with local makers and artisans to complete the interior. That commitment extended to the exterior as well, when our clients commissioned friend and artist, Peter Diepenbrock to finish the grounds with his steel sculptures. Peter’s ‘Bunnies’ greet guests and family as they approach the new home, expressing our clients’ wit and appreciation of light-hearted fun.
The final result is a welcoming and modern home, perfectly reflective of its coastal location and a showcase of our community’s vast creative talents
